UNESCO adopted a resolution entitled “Enhancing the Protection and Restoration of Cultural Heritage through the Use of New and Emerging Technologies” initiated by Armenia

On December 1, in Paris, at the UNESCO Headquarters, within the framework of the 16th Meeting of the High Contracting Parties to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, 136 High Contracting Parties to the Convention unanimously adopted a resolution entitled “Enhancing the Protection and Restoration of Cultural Heritage through the Use of New and Emerging Technologies” initiated by Armenia.

The resolution emphasizes the importance of using new and emerging technologies in safeguarding, protection, documentation and monitoring of cultural heritage during armed conflicts and in their aftermath.

The document calls on UNESCO to foster international cooperation with a view to promoting widespread use of these technologies in the field of cultural heritage protection and underlines the necessity of strengthening technical expertise and institutional capacities.

The goal of the Resolution is to strengthen UNESCO’s digital tools aligning legal norms with new technologies, creativity and cooperation towards the protection, preservation and restoration of cultural heritage.

This initiative reiterates Armenia’s commitment to protecting cultural heritage and advancing the objectives of UNESCO and the 1954 Hague Convention.
